Which lean principles does KanDo Lean cover?

KanDo Lean is an experiential tool: participants develop their own leaning guided by you the facilitator. The learning outcomes will vary depending on the needs of the participants, and how you choose to guide the learning. For example when KanDo Lean is used in financial services or health care the facilitator and participants emphasise different learning points compared to automotive manufacturing.

Below are some of the principles of lean processing that KanDo Lean addresses:-

  • efficient layouts
  • understanding product specifications
  • definition of product quality
  • dealing with surplus materials
  • effective location and storage of components
  • problems with batch production and high WIP
  • communicating with the customer
  • internal communications
  • understanding priorities
  • use of visual displays and pull systems
  • benefits of shorter lead times
  • process design for market requirements
  • overall capacity planning
  • work distribution and balance
  • alternative forms of Kanbans
  • one-piece flow and appropriate documentation systems
  • coping with variable customer demand
  • teamwork and flexibility
  • clear definition of responsibilities
  • customer/supplier relationships
  • dealing with remote businesses
  • avoiding component shortages
  • simplifying the supply of components
  • supply chain information flow and constraints

Large groups: I’d like to run an activity with a very large group of 200 people. Is this possible?

A standard KanDo Lean is designed for use with up to 15 participants, but with multiple sets there is no limit on the size of the group that can undertake the activity.

At MTa we've run KanDo Lean with over 200 people, with multiple teams competing, to generate an energetic, memorable  and thought provoking session.

How long does KanDo Lean last?

To run all 5 phases of KanDo Lean takes 4 - 6 hours. The longer participants spend developing learning points from each phase for the longer the activity will last.

For many applications running only 3 phases is sufficient to generate the desired learning opportunities. This can be accomplished in 2 - 3 hours.
